Newcastle United keeper Rob Elliot believes that his side's victory over Liverpool was huge for the club in their battle to remain in the Premier League.

Newcastle United keeper Rob Elliot has admitted that his side's 2-0 victory over Liverpool was vital in the context of their season.

An own goal from Martin Skrtel and late strike from Georginio Wijnaldum were enough to secure the three points for the Magpies to end a run of back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

Elliot believes that his team's work ethic was the driving force behind their victory and is confident that they will use their display as a platform to further success.

He told the club's official website: "It's a really important result for us. It was vital that we got back to where we were before the Leicester game and show ourselves, as well as the fans, who we are and what we're capable of.

"Our previous two performances didn't reflect that because we struggled to work as a unit, but it's great to see that we can work together so effectively and against such quality opposition."

Newcastle remain in the relegation zone in the Premier League despite their victory at St James' Park.
