Shola Ameobi comes off the bench to rescue a point from their Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland in stoppage time.

Shola Ameobi scored in stoppage time to rescue Newcastle United a point from this afternoon's Tyne-Wear derby against ten-man Sunderland at the Sports Direct Arena.

The match started at a high tempo, with referee Mike Dean handing out five bookings within the opening 20 minutes.

In what was Sunderland's first real attack of the encounter, the deadlock was broken. Michael Turner was brought down inside the area by Mike Williamson and Nicklas Bendtner stepped up to beat Tim Krul from the resultant penalty after 24 minutes.

Demba Ba went close to drawing the Magpies level in the 44th minute, but his headed effort struck the crossbar.

Krul denied Bendtner and James McClean putting Sunderland further in front in the 57th minute with a quick double save.

Just moments later the visiting Black Cats were down to ten men. Stephane Sessegnon appeared to catch Cheick Tiote in the face with his arm and referee Dean brandished a straight red card.

Newcastle began to dominate as they made their numerical advantage show, but they found Simon Mignolet in the Sunderland goal in stubborn mood.

Ba looked to have wasted Newcastle's best chance for an equaliser eight minutes from time when his penalty was saved by Mignolet after Fraizer Campbell has brought down Ameobi.

However, in the first minute of time added on, Ameobi reacted quickest to a Williamson header and shot through the legs of Mignolet, denying Sunderland their first victory at Newcastle since 2000.

To make matters worse for Sunderland, captain Lee Cattermole was handed his marching orders after the final whistle for aiming foul language at the match officials.
