Everton come from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 at St James' Park in the Premier League.

Everton have come from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 at St James' Park in the Premier League.

Despite an early goal from Papiss Cisse, strikes from Leighton Baines and Victor Anichebe were enough for the Toffees to claim the three points on Tyneside.

The home side took the lead inside 65 seconds when Cisse headed over Tim Howard following Tim Krul's long punt upfield.

Despite going behind, Everton responded well as Baines's free kick was clawed away by Krul.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent in the first half, but it was the visitors who got themselves level in spectacular style at the end of the opening half.

While Krul did well to deny Baines earlier in the match, the Dutchman had no chance as the left-back drilled an unstoppable free kick from 30 yards into the top corner.

Shola Ameobi had a glorious chance to put Newcastle back in front on 58 minutes - only for the striker to drag his shot wide of goal having done all the hard work by controlling Sylvan Marveaux's pass.

The Magpies were made to pay with a hour played as Victor Anichebe converted from close range after good work from Nikica Jelavic.

Howard came to Everton's rescue when he saved from Gabriel Obertan and Cisse respectively, while Krul had to tip Marouane Fellaini's lob over the bar at the other end.

The visitors withstood some late Newcastle pressure to record a victory that has taken them up to fifth place in the table.
