Newcastle United have reportedly rejected a loan bid from West Bromwich Albion for Dwight Gayle.
The Magpies have been in the hunt for Baggies striker Salomon Rondon for a number of weeks, but West Brom are eager to hang on to their asset.
Rondon, who is heading into the final year of his contract at The Hawthorns, is believed to have a release clause worth £16.5m and Albion are unlikely to budge from that fee.
Indeed, Newcastle are tipped to return with an improved bid amid reports of Aleksandar Mitrovic being sold to raise funds for the Venezuela international.
According to the Newcastle Chronicle, however, the Baggies have decided to test the Tynesiders' resolve with a bid for Gayle, which has been turned down.
Gayle, 27, scored six Premier League goals in 35 appearances for Newcastle during the 2017-18 campaign.
