Newcastle United are set to make a £25m bid for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady, according to a report.

The Magpies are trying to add more strength to their squad for the second half of the season in a bid to provide Eddie Howe with the quality needed to avoid relegation.

The club have already brought in Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood this month, but further defensive signings are becoming a priority before the transfer window shuts.

According to the Daily Star, Newcastle are now lining up a £25m bid for Coady, with the Magpies hoping to lure the experienced defender to St James' Park, although Wolves are in no pressure to sell their club captain.

The England international has been a regular within the squad this season, having made 21 Premier League appearances, scoring twice, and the club are only set to sell him if the bid is too good to reject.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have conceded 43 goals throughout the campaign, which is the second-worst defensive record in the league behind Norwich City. body check tags ::
