Alan Shearer has claimed that former club Newcastle United made a mistake by not properly strengthening their squad over the summer.
The Magpies, who are currently two points off the relegation zone, brought in three new players to St James' Park at the start of the season while allowing seven others to leave.
"Newcastle missed a huge opportunity in the summer," Shearer told The Sun. "Having punched above their weight last season and almost made it into the top four, this was the time to spend.
"The best time to buy is when you are in a position of strength."
Newcastle return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Queens Park Rangers.
