Ajax and AZ Alkmaar's last-16 encounter in the Dutch cup was abandoned in the 38th minute after a pitch invader attacked AZ's goalkeeper.
The spectator ran towards Esteban and the Costa Rican keeper retaliated by kicking out at the fan.
The referee sent Esteban off for the karate-style kick which led to protests from the visitors.
Coach Gert Jan Verbeek ordered his team to leave the pitch and while in the dressing room the visitors decided not to return to the field of play.
"I saw that Esteban was attacked and that he defended himself," Ajax coach Frank de Boer said.
"I don't know how I would have reacted but I can understand Esteban with his South American temper. I understand the decision of Alkmaar because of all the emotion at that moment."
Alkmaar director Toon Gebrands has said that the club would respect any decision taken by the disciplinary board of the Dutch football but that AZ didn't feel safe returning to the pitch.
