Former Manchester United and England centre-back Rio Ferdinand calls on David Gill to stand for the FIFA presidency following Sepp Blatter's resignation.

Former England centre-back Rio Ferdinand has called for the FA's David Gill to stand in the upcoming emergency FIFA presidential election.

A number of candidates are expected to put themselves forward for the top job in world football's governing body after incumbent president Sepp Blatter announced his intention to resign.

Gill has already revealed that Blatter's shock U-turn, which comes just four days after he was elected for a fifth term, could see him go back on his decision to reject a role on the FIFA Executive Committee, but Ferdinand wants to see him "step forward" as Blatter's replacement.

"David Gill.....do the honourable thing & please step forward #Fifa," he wrote on Twitter.

Prince Ali and David Ginola have already confirmed that they plan to stand in the election, which will take place between September 2015 and March 2016.
