The FIFA presidency election is forced into a second round of voting in Zurich as neither Sepp Blatter nor Prince Ali win two thirds of the vote.

The FIFA presidency election has been forced into a second round of voting in Zurich after neither Sepp Blatter nor Prince Ali received two thirds of votes.

Current president Blatter was widely expected to be handed a fifth term in office with an overwhelming majority, but the 79-year-old's campaign has taken a hit.

Out of the 206 votes cast by member associations, 73 went in favour of opposing candidate Prince Ali, while Blatter took 133, which is five votes short of the majority needed to take the presidency in the first round of voting.

The whole of FIFA was rocked by the news on Wednesday that seven football officials had been arrested in Zurich on suspicion of bribery, money laundering and racketeering.

It has been alleged that more than $100m (£65m) was accepted in bribes from the 1990s to the present day, which has prompted the Swiss authorities to investigate the allocation of the 2018 Russia World Cups and 2022 Qatar World Cups.

A majority win is required in the second round.
