Premier League director of communications Dan Johnson says that goal-line technology is likely to be implemented in the 2013-14 season as opposed to this year.

Premier League director of communications Dan Johnson has claimed that goal-line technology is expected to be implemented into the top flight of English football in the 2013-14 campaign.

The International Football Association Board voted unanimously in favour of two systems known as Hawk-Eye and GoalRef to be installed in world football.

While some reports have suggested that goal-line technology could be introduced into the Premier League by Christmas this year, Johnson believes that the target is too ambitious.

"What we are saying is as soon as practically possible [it will be implemented]," Johnson told talkSPORT.

"What we've got to do now is sit down with the two companies, Hawk-Eye and GoalRef, get an idea of which technology would be the most suitable for the Premier League, get an idea of the cost, and then speak to our clubs about when we think it might be suitable to bring in.

"We are not ruling it out during the course of the season but that would be ambitious and maybe the start of next season would be more realistic."

FIFA have confirmed that the technology will be used in the Club World Cup this year.
