Premier League clubs pledge to invest "at least £1bn" of their latest domestic TV deal, worth around £5bn, on causes outside the top flight.

Premier League clubs have pledged to invest "at least £1bn" of their £5bn domestic TV deal on causes outside the top flight.

On Thursday, the 20 top-tier clubs met for the first time since the announcement of the sale of UK live broadcast rights from 2016-17 to 2018-19.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore told a press conference: "The clubs have always stepped up to the plate when it comes to sharing their success.

"These are unprecedented levels of redistribution in world sport, let alone football, which will deliver long-term progress for English football whether you are a fan, lower league club or involved in the grassroots.

"The clubs also committed to adopting the living wage for all their full-time employees by the start of the 2016-17 season at the latest. All this demonstrates once again that a good result for the Premier League is good for the rest of the game and beyond."

The £1bn sum will include increased investment in grassroots sport, facilities and fan engagement, including more money for the fund that clubs use to subsidise tickets and travel for away supporters.
