Prince Ali against delay of FIFA presidential election

Prince Ali says that delaying next February's FIFA presidential election is not the right move.

Prince Ali has spoken out against the notion of postponing next February's presidential election due to the recent bans issued to key figures in world football.

Outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatter, UEFA president Michel Platini and FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke have all been given 90-day suspensions amid allegations of corruption.

Blatter is under criminal investigation in relation to an alleged "disloyal" £1.3m payment made to Platini in 2011.

Various FIFA members have called for an emergency executive committee meeting to discuss the possibility of delaying the election scheduled for February 26, but Prince Ali believes that a postponement is not the answer.

In a statement, Prince Ali, who is a candidate for the presidency, said: "Delaying the scheduled election would only postpone needed change and create further instability. It would tell the world that lessons haven't been learned, that the same backroom deals that have discredited FIFA in the first place continue.

"Members of the FIFA Executive Committee should remember that Football Associations, players, coaches and fans the world over are watching.

"The ExCo should not interfere with an ongoing process that was put in place by the ad hoc electoral committee. The election date of February 26 was set three months ago with a clear procedure that meets all of FIFA's statutory requirements. Candidates have had plenty of time to declare and still do. The rules should not be changed after the game has started."

Blatter, Platini and Valcke all deny any wrongdoing.
