Mike Riley, head of Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, believes that video technology should be introduced in English football to help out referees.

Mike Riley, head of Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, has said that video technology should be introduced in English football to help referees cut out clear mistakes.

The officiating profession has come under scrutiny in recent months following a series of high-profile errors in Premier League games.

In Saturday's clash between Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion, which finished 3-0 to the Citizens, referee Neil Swarbrick sent off Gareth McAuley instead of Craig Dawson.

Riley told BBC Sport: "We need to see what technology we can use to help get referees' decisions more accurate. Football as a whole has to look at it.

"All it takes is a split-second lapse in concentration. Neil had four or five elements to judge in half a second and it is that type of situation that would lend itself to technology.

"Technology doesn't provide a solution to everything but we can all think of case where a quick reference to a video replay would help us get the decision right."

Swarbrick has apologised for his error at the Etihad Stadium.
