Coventry improved in the second period and were rewarded for their efforts in the 55th minute as Gary McSheffrey collected Chris Hussey's pass before firing his shot past Jamie Ashdown.
Chris Maguire almost levelled the match for Portsmouth but his long-range strike flew wide of the target.
The home side delivered a crucial blow 15 minutes from time as Oliver Norwood scored from close range to secure all three points.
