Paris Saint-Germain have announced that captain Marquinhos has signed a new contract at the Parc des Princes until the summer of 2028.

The 29-year-old took over as captain following Thiago Silva's exit on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 and has remained an irreplaceable figure in the Parisiens' backline.

Marquinhos has scored two goals and set up one more in 42 outings across all tournaments during the current season, starting 29 Ligue 1 games for the runaway leaders.

Negotiations over a new deal for the Brazil international are believed to have been rumbling on in the background for some time, and he has now put pen to paper on a new long-term deal.

Marquinhos will be 34 years of age by the time his renewal runs out, and he expressed his pride at signing on the dotted line to the official PSG website, saying: "I am delighted to sign a contract extension, but also very proud.

"This is a very special moment for me. Paris Saint-Germain has always shown confidence in me, and I also have a lot of confidence in this club. I am convinced that we will continue to achieve great things together in the years to come."

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi also hailed the centre-back's "winning spirit" and "exceptional" commitment to the Parisiens, whom he has represented since his teenage years.

"We are very happy Marquinhos has extended his time with the Paris Saint-Germain family. I remember when he joined the Club at the age of 19. From day one, he showed great dedication and a winning spirit – always fighting for the Paris Saint-Germain jersey," Al-Khelaifi added.

"His football talent, experience and commitment to the Club are exceptional. I know we will have many more successes together as Marquinhos' history continues with PSG."

Marquinhos learned his trade in the Corinthians youth academy before venturing into European football with Roma, joining on loan in the summer of 2012 before making his stay permanent six months later.

Having hit the ground running in Europe, Marquinhos spent just one full year in Rome before joining PSG in a €31.4m (£27.3m) deal 10 years ago, and he has since made 405 appearances for the club in all tournaments.

The South American sits third in the club's all-time appearance charts behind Marco Verratti (413) and Jean-Marc Pilorget (435), and he has contributed 38 goals and 10 assists for Les Parisiens in that time.

Marquinhos's glittering silverware collection in Paris includes seven Ligue 1 titles, six Coupe de France crowns, six Coupe de la Ligue honours and eight Trophee des Champions triumphs, while he also won the Copa America with Brazil in 2019.

The 29-year-old's displays at the back for PSG have been recognised with four inclusions in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year, while he made the Champions League Team of the Season in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Marquinhos will be expected to make his 406th appearance for the Ligue 1 champions in Sunday's clash with Auxerre, as PSG aim to move to within one point of retaining their title. body check tags ::
