Football finance expert Dr Chris Brady has admitted that "at least eight" Premier League clubs could be investigated following the recent administration of Scottish club Rangers.
The investigation could reportedly involve a large quantity of money in unpaid tax, and probes are said to be underway.
"Rangers may be the tip of the iceberg. EBTs became popular with clubs as a means of reducing crippling wage bills. We believe at least eight current or former Premier League sides are being investigated," said Brady.
Rangers face a potential bill of more than £70m in an ongoing inquiry surrounding the use of a tax avoidance device.
