It was a game of few chances and Middlesbrough's second consecutive goalless draw.
Boro struck the frame of the goal twice late on when Marvin Emnes's header hit the post before Barry Robson's long-range drive deflected off the crossbar.
Middlesbrough remain second behind Southampton and host Millwall after the upcoming international break while Reading, who drop one place to 15th, travel to Burnley in two weeks.
