Real Madrid were unable to break the deadlock in the first half of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Cypriot minnows APOEL Nicosia.
The Spanish giants, who are nine-time winners of Europe's premier competition, dominated the possession stats but were frustrated by stubborn APOEL defending.
Twice though Madrid were able to penetrate the hosts' defence but on both occasions missed chances to open the scoring.
Firstly Nuri Sahin's good work presented Cristiano Ronaldo with an opportunity on goal, but the prolific forward's shot was saved by Dionisis Chiotis.
Karim Benzema then wasted a golden chance to give Madrid a half-time lead. With Sahin again the architect, the ball arrived into the box from the right but the Frenchman shot into the ground and over the bar from just two yards.
