German defender Matthias Ginter has revealed that he will be leaving Borussia Monchengladbach on a free transfer when his contract expires next June.
The 27-year-old has made 165 appearances for Monchengladbach since joining the club from Borussia Dortmund in July 2017.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have both been credited with an interest in the centre-back, who has been capped on 46 occasions by the German national team.
Ginter has said that he made the decision to seek pastures new "after a long period of reflection".
"After a long period of reflection, I have decided not to renew my contract which lasts until this summer," Ginter wrote on Instagram.
"After five terrific years at Borussia Monchengladbach, I have decided to follow another path in my career to develop professionally and on a personal level."
Barcelona are believed to view Ginter as the ideal low-cost signing amid their financial issues, while Real Madrid are also seemingly keen to improve their defensive options for next season, having lost Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos over the summer. body check tags ::
