Euro 2012 Preview: Republic of Ireland

Sports Mole previews the Republic of Ireland's chances at what will be only their second European Championships this summer.

This summer the Republic of Ireland will be competing in their first major tournament since the World Cup in 2002.

What's more, the Irish have not featured in a European Championships since 1988.

Despite a lack of tournament experience, Ireland are regarded by many as a hard working side that could cause their opposition problems - a school of thought proved by a recent performance away in Russia during qualifying.

Group: C

Manager: Giovanni Trapattoni - While his squad have no experience of a European Championships, Trapattoni does from his stint in charge of his native Italy. The 73-year-old took control of the Irish back in 2008.

Players to watch:

Robbie Keane: His record of 53 goals in 115 international matches speaks for itself. Despite playing for LA Galaxy, Keane has not lost any of his predatory instincts.

Shay Given: Widely accepted as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League. The Aston Villa stopper will have to be at his best if Ireland are to cause an upset.

James McClean: Sunderland winger McClean played little part in qualifying. However, his emergence during the last six months of the season has made him an exciting youngster to watch this summer.
