Joey Barton has responded on Twitter to Matt Holland's criticisms regarding his decision not to play for the Republic of Ireland.
Holland, a former Ireland international, spoke on radio about Barton's eligibility to represent the nation due to his grandmother's place of birth.
Barton tweeted: "Haha Matt Holland best not of been using my name in vain on a sh*tty radio talkshow. Remember playing against him, well when I say playing...
"Sh*t players talking sh*t the bain of my life. Go and live life away from football, stop being so bitter, twisted and sad. Its boring
"I couldn't play for Ireland as am not Irish, not rocket science. Forget my grandparents, I'M NOT Irish. If I was, I off declared myself 4 em."
Barton has one England cap, which he earned against Spain in 2007.
