FAI: 'Giovanni Trapattoni's future under review'

The FAI announce that they are planning a review of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup campaign, which looks likely to end in failure following a 1-0 defeat to Austria.

The Football Association of Ireland have announced that they will be conducting a review of the country's World Cup qualification campaign which could bring to an end Giovanni Trapattoni's reign as manager.

Consecutive defeats - a 2-1 loss to Sweden on Friday and a 1-0 failure in Austria on Tuesday - mean that the Republic's hopes of qualifying for Brazil 2014 are now all but over, and so too could be Trapattoni's five-year tenure in charge.

An FAI statement read: "The recent results against Sweden and Austria were very disappointing for everyone involved in Irish football, the manager, the players and supporters.

"Our aim of qualification, although mathematically possible, is now highly unlikely even though the team will always do everything within their power to keep that hope alive.

"The FAI Board of Management will now consider the current position over the coming days."

The 74-year-old Italian has overseen 63 games as Ireland boss, winning 26, drawing 22 and losing 15 of those matches.
