Shay Given: 'Scotland fans are jealous of Aiden McGeady, James McCarthy'

Shay Given says that a hostile reception for Scotland-born Republic of Ireland pair Aiden McGeady and James McCarthy in Glasgow on Friday will be linked to jealousy.

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has claimed that Scotland supporters are jealous that the Irish have James McCarthy and Aiden McGeady in their ranks.

The duo - both born and raised in Scotland - are bracing themselves for a hostile reception in Friday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Glasgow after electing not to represent the country of their birth.

"You could go around every country in Europe and say there are players born in different countries who are playing for them, so I did think it was unfair," Given is quoted as saying by BT Sport.

"You can go through the Scottish squad as well and see some of their players not being born in Scotland - that's not having a go at them, they are the rules of FIFA or whatever - so I did think it was unfair on both Aiden and James.

"But they are great players and that's probably why we are standing here talking about them, because [the Scots] probably wish they were playing for Scotland."

Martin O'Neill's Ireland go into the clash second in Group D, three points clear of the fourth-placed Scots.
