Russell Martin won't hold back against Robert Lewandowski

Russell Martin insists that Scotland will not hold back against Poland after Robert Lewandowski called for the referee to be strong in Thursday's Euro 2016 qualifier.

Russell Martin has warned Poland striker Robert Lewandowski that Scotland will not hold back in tackles during the Euro 2016 qualifier at Hampden Park.

In-form Bayern Munich man Lewandowski has asked for the referee to be strong tomorrow after he was angered by a challenge from Martin's teammate Gordon Greer in the reverse fixture in Group D.

Lewandowski, who has scored 12 goals in his last four games for Bayern, revealed after the game that the "brutal" tackle had broken his shin pad, but Norwich City defender Martin is not concerned.

"It was a great tackle," Martin told Sky Sports News. "As a defender now it's harder to make those tackles early on in the game.

"People always talk about - it's quite an old school thing now - getting an early tackle in, letting them know they're in a game. You run the risk of getting booked or sent off now with the way the game has gone in terms of physicality.

"That tackle was a great tackle, it wasn't even a free-kick, so if we get the chance to do that again on Thursday then I'm sure someone will take it."

Scotland are fourth in the group and must avoid defeat against Poland if they are to stand any chance of finishing in the top three places which would guarantee at least a playoff.
