Southampton were Hughes' fifth Premier League club.

Mark Hughes has left Southampton after a poor start to the Premier League campaign.

The club have won just one of their 14 league matches under Hughes this season, who has been replaced on a temporary basis by Kelvin Davis.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at how Hughes fared at his other Premier League clubs.

Blackburn

Hughes' first spell as a manager in club football was largely a success, after taking over following a stint as Wales coach. He kept Rovers up and also took them to a rare FA Cup semi-final appearance in his first season, before a sixth-place finish the following year took the club back into Europe. Blackburn had two more top-10 finishes under Hughes – and another FA Cup semi-final – before he left the club.

Manchester City

The Welshman joined Manchester City less than two months before their takeover. Before the investment from Abu Dhabi, Hughes helped the club sign Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta, and they added Robinho after the takeover was confirmed on transfer deadline day 2008. Hughes managed a 10th-place finish and a trip to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. The following season, having made signings like Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor, he led City to the semi-finals of the League Cup but, despite suffering just two defeats in all competitions, Hughes was sacked two hours after a 4-3 win against Sunderland, which left City six points off a Champions League spot in December.

Fulham

Hughes replaced Roy Hodgson at Fulham in July but only spent one season with the London club. The Cottagers finished eighth in the Premier League but Hughes decided to leave the club, a decision he later said was probably wrong.

QPR

His next club was also in London as he took over QPR in January 2012 after Neil Warnock was sacked following a run of nine games without a win. Hughes led the Rs to safety thanks to five straight home victories to end the season, beating Liverpool, Arsenal, Swansea, Tottenham and Stoke. But he was sacked in November after a winless start to the Premier League season.

Stoke

Hughes returned to management at the end of the season, when he replaced Tony Pulis at Stoke. Charged with improving the playing style of the mid-table Premier League club, Hughes reeled off three successive ninth-placed finishes. The high point was December 2015, when a front three of Marko Arnautovic, Xherdan Shaqiri and Bojan Krkic inspired the Potters to 2-0 home victories over both Manchester clubs. But progress stalled and, after finishing 13th in 2016-17, Hughes was sacked in January 2018, with Stoke in the relegation zone and having suffered a shock FA Cup defeat to fourth-tier Coventry.
