Danny Ings: 'Southampton the best club for me'

Danny Ings admits that "it means a lot to play for Southampton" after making his debut in Sunday's goalless draw with Burnley.

Southampton striker Danny Ings has said that he is confident the goals will flow following his loan move to the south coast.

The 26-year-old sealed a return "home" on transfer deadline day and was immediately involved in the Saints' opening Premier League clash of the season against Burnley.

Ings helped to turn the game in Southampton's favour during his 35 minutes on the field, but he ultimately failed to find a way through in the goalless draw.

Winchester-born Ings is simply happy to be playing in the red and white strip, though, and believes that Sunday's stalemate marks a positive start to a new chapter.

"It means a lot to play for Southampton," he told BBC Sport. "I've had such a tough time the last few years trying to break into a team that's one of the best in Europe. I've come away from Liverpool to challenge myself but I don't think I could be at a better club.

"I'm still building fitness but I feel physically great. Burnley are a difficult team to play against but in the second half we got hold of the game, I had a few chances. It was a good start to the season and if we keep playing like that the goals will come."

Ings previously spent four years playing for Burnley, racking up 38 goals in 122 league outings for the Clarets.
