Southampton striker Rickie Lambert insists that everyone involved with the club should be proud to have achieved their highest ever points tally in the Premier League.

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has insisted that everyone at the club should be proud to have achieved their highest ever points total in the Premier League.

The 1-0 victory over Swansea City on Saturday ensured that Mauricio Pochettino's side reached 55 points, beating their previous highest points tally of 54, which was set in a 42-game season in 1994-95.

Lambert, who came off the bench to score the injury-time winner against the Swans, has admitted that the squad were desperate to break the record and described it as a "big achievement".

"I know some people say we don't look to the history, but we knew about it for a long time and we were desperate to break it (points total) because we know that it's a big achievement," Lambert told BBC Radio Solent.

"To have achieved what we have over the past four years, and then to progress to where we are now, tops off everything. It has been superb. It's full credit to everyone from top to the bottom.

"It has been a pleasure to play alongside everyone, and getting a win at the end of the away fixtures in front of the away fans is superb."

The Saints head into the final game of the season against Manchester United with a guaranteed eighth-placed finish in the Premier League.
