Everton picked up their first win of the new Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary's this afternoon.

The Toffees broke the deadlock midway through the first half through Romelu Lukaku, who added a second right on the stroke of half time to put his side in control.

The third arrived late on when Ross Barkley curled an effort into the far corner to clinch a memorable victory for Roberto Martinez's side.

Here, Sports Mole looks at who impressed over the course of the 90 minutes.

SOUTHAMPTON

Goal

Maarten Stekelenburg: Conceded three times from four shots on target, but could do nothing about any of the goals. (6/10)

Defence

Cedric Soares: Didn't do anything particularly wrong defensively, but failed to give Tadic enough support going forward and was powerless to resist Everton's counter-attacks. (5/10)

Jose Fonte: Really struggled up against Lukaku, who had pace and power on the Southampton skipper. (5/10)

Maya Yoshida: Far from a convincing defensive performance. Committed to challenges too readily and must shoulder some of the blame for the second goal. (5/10)

Matt Targett: Got forward well, particularly in the opening exchanges when Kone failed to track back. However, became less of an attacking threat as the game wore on and eventually found the roles reversed as he struggled to deal with Kone. (5/10)

Midfield

Steven Davis: Unable to stop the quick breaks that led to Everton's first-half goals. Didn't have enough of an influence in the middle of the park, allowing Barkley to grow in confidence. (5/10)

Victor Wanyama: Broke up play quite well when required, and could do nothing about stopping the opening goal as he was in the opposition box. Perhaps should have done better with three sights of goal, but that is not what he is in the team for. (6/10)

Dusan Tadic: Minimal impact in the first half, aside from one or two dangerous deliveries into the area. Struggled to get into the game before being taken off at half time. (5/10)

Sadio Mane: Was one of the few Southampton players that looked like causing Everton problems. Made some clever runs down the channels, but more often than not wasted the position. (6/10)

Shane Long: Handed a chance from the start following his equaliser last time out, but could not grab it. Began the match brightly enough, but faded quickly and it was no surprise to see him taken off. (5/10)

Attack

Graziano Pelle: Southampton's most dangerous player on the day. Held the ball up well and offered a presence in the box, causing plenty of problems in the opening 20 minutes or so. Squandered a few decent chances, though, and ultimately came off second best to the centre-backs. (6/10)

Substitutes

Oriol Romeu: Booked within minutes of coming on at half time for his debut. Walked a tightrope from that point on, but helped the Saints to dominate the opening stages of the second half. (6/10)

Jay Rodriguez: Replaced the ineffective Long with just under 20 minutes remaining but fared no better. Valuable game time as he continues his recovery to match fitness, though. (6/10)

James Ward-Prowse: Introduced with a little over 10 minutes left in the game and was unable to spark a comeback. (6/10)

EVERTON

Goal

Tim Howard: Made a crucial stop to deny Mane just seconds before his side took the lead. In hindsight, that save was as important as a goal for the Toffees. (7/10)

Defence

Seamus Coleman: Did not venture as far forward as we are used to seeing, although he did break off his shackles late on to set up Barkley's goal. (7/10)

John Stones: Superb performance from the youngster in the heart of the defence. Stood up to the physical challenge of Pelle well and put in a performance that belied his age. Losing him in this transfer window would be a major blow. (8/10)

Phil Jagielka: Alongside Stones provided the basis for Everton to go on and record such an impressive victory. Safe as houses at the back. (8/10)

Brendon Galloway: Not always entirely convincing, but grew into the game and put in a good performance overall. A run of fixtures with Baines out injured could see him blossom. (7/10)

Midfield

James McCarthy: Flew under the radar for the most part, keeping things ticking over in midfield and preventing Southampton from getting any sort of momentum going. (6/10)

Gareth Barry: Provided a shield for the back four, breaking up play and plugging the gaps to limit the influence of Mane, Tadic and co. (6/10)

Arouna Kone: Handed a start and began the match lazily in terms of defending. Soon began to warm to the task, though, and provided a fine cross from which Lukaku opened the scoring. (7/10)

Ross Barkley: Missed one great chance, but that is about the only negative thing you can say about the performance. Really bright in the middle of the park and picked up a goal and an assist to cap off his display. (8/10)

Tom Cleverley: Squandered the rebound from Barkley's missed chance. Too keen to come inside considering he was playing in a wider role, particularly without the overlapping runs of Baines. (6/10)

Attack

Romelu Lukaku: Unplayable at times. His pace and power caused Southampton all sorts of problems in the first half, with an early run down the left hinting at a sign of things to come. Got the first two goals, both of which he took well, and while his influence faded a little after the break, he had already done the damage. (9/10)

Substitutes

Steven Naismith: Brought on for Kone with 10 minutes left of the match and failed to make an impact. (6/10)

Tyias Browning: Introduced in the 88th minute and had no time to make an impression on the game. (6/10)

Gerard Deulofeu: Came on with Browning to make his return to the Premier League, but didn't have enough time. (6/10)
