Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has been ruled out of Belgium's game against Mexico on Friday night due to an ankle injury.
The 30-year-old, who recently became his country's most capped player with 97 appearances, complained of discomfort in his ankle during training with the Red Devils this week.
However, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez played down Vertonghen's injury, suggesting that the centre-back could be fit for Tuesday's friendly against Japan.
"Jan will not be in the squad tomorrow either, he is suffering from a slight discomfort in his ankle, but that's nothing serious," Martinez explained at his pre-match press conference.
Vertonghen has played a key role this season for Tottenham, who are third in the Premier League table and have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League.
Spurs return to action after the international break with a crucial Premier League derby against Arsenal on November 18.
