Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville claims that Mauricio Pochettino has taken Tottenham Hotspur "as far as he can".

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino has taken Tottenham Hotspur "as far as he can".

Pochettino took charge of Tottenham in the summer of 2014, and has led the capital outfit to two third-place finishes and a runners-up spot in the Premier League since arriving as head coach.

Tottenham did not spend a penny in the recent summer transfer window, however, and Neville has insisted that Pochettino - recently linked with the Real Madrid job - could not possibly take the club further.

Spurs' record of 21 points from their opening nine matches of the 2018-19 campaign represented their best ever Premier League start, but the London club suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Monday night.

Pochettino recently admitted that he was 'not in his best mood' at Tottenham, and Neville has now suggested that the Argentine will move on.

"He has always managed things well and pushed things away,' Neville told Sky Sports News. "They are not spending the money nowhere near the other top clubs.

"Pochettino is a fantastic manager but he has always wanted to go the top, top European clubs and it feels to me as though he has gone as far as he can with Tottenham."

Pochettino has won 128 of his 232 matches in charge of Tottenham.
