At the end of the 2014-15 campaign, former goalkeeper Friedel announced that he was ending his playing days between the sticks and since then, the 46-year-old has taken charge of the United States' Under-19 side.
However, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur stopper will now move onto the club scene with New England, and Friedel is delighted to have been given an opportunity to continue his career in the dugout.
Friedel told the club's official website: "My staff and I are delighted and honored to have been hired by the New England Revolution.
"I can guarantee that we, the staff and players, will give 100% commitment to the club and our fans while looking forward to all the challenges ahead. We can't wait to get started right away building this club for the 2018 season."
New England finished in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings this season.
