Six years ago today, Jermain Defoe found the net five times as Tottenham Hotspur recorded a 9-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane.

As far as Premier League strikers go, few have been more clinical in front of goal than Jermain Defoe.

The current Sunderland centre-forward has found the net 131 times for his four teams, which leaves him 11th on the all-time goalscoring list. Not only that, the 33-year-old is part of an exclusive club, which he joined six years ago today when Tottenham Hotspur played host to Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane.

Up until that point, only Andy Cole and Alan Shearer had scored five goals in one Premier League match, but a rampant Defoe followed suit as Spurs hammered the Latics with a second-half rout.

His quintet of goals all came after the restart in North London, with the first of them arriving in the 51st minute. Aaron Lennon sent over a low cross, which Defoe turned in from close range.

Three minutes later his tally was doubled when the Wigan defence failed to cut out Wilson Palacios's pass. It sent Defoe clean through and the centre-forward went on to beat Chris Kirkland with a powerful strike from a tight angle.

The hat-trick was then completed within seven minutes as Defoe darted to the near post to volley home Lennon's cross from the right byline.

His fourth and fifth goals of the afternoon came in the 69th and 87th minutes respectively and were created by Croatian duo Vedran Corluka and Niko Krancjar, which made Defoe the first player to bulge the net on five occasions in the English top flight since 1999.

Defoe's haul contributed to a 9-1 victory for Spurs - their biggest in 32 years. Also on the scoresheet was Peter Crouch, David Bentley, Lennon and Krancjar, while Wigan's solo goal came courtesy of Austrian midfielder Paul Scharner.

Unsurprisingly, though, the headlines belonged to Defoe, who paid tribute to the performance of Lennon after the final whistle when he said: "Azza made the difference. He's so direct. When you've got someone with that pace in the team, he's so direct it's just easy for everyone.

"He gets the ball, you just leave him in a one on one and get in the box. Two fantastic crosses, which I made sure my movement was right for, and I got on the end of them and scored."

Meanwhile, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp added: "He's an amazing finisher. Wayne Rooney's fantastic - a complete all-round player - but as a finisher, Defoe is the best out there."

Spurs: Gomes; Assou-Ekotto (Bassong), Dawson, Woodgate, Corluka; Lennon (Bentley), Huddlestone, Palacios (Jenas), Krancjar; Crouch, Defoe

Wigan: Kirkland; Edman, Scharner, Bramble, Boyce, Melchiot (Cho); Thomas (Gomez), N'Zogba, Diame; Scotland, Rodallega
