The director of non-League Kendal Town resigns after being charged by the FA for making anti-Semitic comments on social media, which he describes as "banter".

The director of non-League Kendal Town has resigned after being charged by the Football Association for making anti-Semitic comments on social media about Tottenham Hotspur.

Graham O'Callaghan, commercial manager of the eighth-tier side, wrote on Facebook: "yes, Chelsea versus the yids cup final", after Spurs beat Sheffield United in the League Cup semi-final.

O'Callaghan, who has until February 25 to respond to the FA's charge of using "abusive and/or insulting and/or improper language", also used Facebook to announce that he was quitting the club.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the management committee at my beloved Kendal Town FC," he said.

"I will deny that the comment was racist and it was taken totally wrongly by someone and for that I will apologise unreservedly.

"Unfortunately I have taken this measure to try and reduce the impact it [might] have on a truly brilliant football club."

He also told BBC Cumbria that his comments were only "banter".

Kendal Town confirmed O'Callaghan's resignation on their website. In a statement the club said: "Whilst these postings are not linked, supported or endorsed by Kendal Town Football Club in any way, Graham has tendered his immediate resignation from all official duties to prevent any inadvertent connections being made."

Kendal Town are currently 14th in the Evo-Stik First Division North.
