How does Willian compare to Tottenham Hotspur's other wingers?

Sports Mole takes a statistical look at the comparison between Willian and Tottenham Hotspur's other wingers.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly agreed a deal with Chelsea attacker Willian ahead of next season.

The 31-year-old will see his current contract at Stamford Bridge expire at the end of June, and it is understood that he will seek pastures new ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

A number of clubs have been linked with the Brazil international, but Spurs have allegedly won the race for the attacker, who could link up with Jose Mourinho for the second time in his career.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Willian and Tottenham's current wingers stack up against each other across the board during the 2019-20 season.

GOALS

Willian has scored seven times in 37 appearances for Chelsea during the current campaign, which is the same number as Lucas Moura in all competitions. Erik Lamela has managed just four goals in 27 outings this term, while Steven Bergwijn has netted twice in seven outings since his January arrival.

Ryan Sessegnon has only scored once for Spurs this term, although the 19-year-old has featured on just 12 occasions. Son Heung-min comes out on top in this particular category as the 27-year-old has netted 16 times in 32 appearances, including nine in the Premier League during an impressive campaign.

Willian's minutes per goal in the Premier League this season is 386, while Son's is 195. Interestingly, all five of Willian's Premier League goals this season have come with his right foot, with four of those coming inside the box. Son has a better variation - five with his right foot, three with his left and one header, although all nine of the South Korean's Premier League goals have been scored inside the box.

Lucas also has a better variation in terms of goals scored, having struck twice with his right foot, once with his left and once with his head. That said, Willian has one more Premier League goal than Lucas this term and netted twice against Tottenham in the Premier League back in December.

Willian's record is far superior to Lamela's though, scoring five Premier League goals to the Argentine's two. Both of Lamela's league goals this season have come with his left foot - one from inside the box and one from outside the box.

ASSISTS

Willian has managed six assists in all competitions this season, five of which have been in the Premier League. Son is actually at the top of this list once again with nine assists, eight in the Premier League. However, Lucas only has three assists in all competitions, while Lamela has six across the board in 27 outings.

Sessegnon and Bergwijn should be judged differently due to their lack of minutes, but they have only managed one assist between them this season, and it is difficult to imagine them providing big numbers next term.

Mourinho will certainly be hoping that Willian can bring some creativity to the team next season if he does arrive, and it is worth noting that the Brazil international has 59 assists in 329 appearances for Chelsea since arriving from Russian football back in 2013.

There does appear to be a spot open on the right of Tottenham's attack, and the thought of Willian operating alongside Harry Kane and Son in the final third is a potentially enticing one for the club's supporters.

ALL-ROUND PLAY

Willian has a pass success rate of 83% in the Premier League this season, while that figure drops to 78% in the Champions League. The Brazil international has created nine big chances in the Premier League this term, while he has totalled 1,035 passes in England's top flight this term.

Willian has also had 1,526 touches, while the South American's shooting accuracy is down at 50%, having managed 17 shots on target and 17 off target in the Premier League this season.

Lamela's shooting accuracy is superior at 60%, although the Argentine has certainly been less involved in all-round play, managing just 426 passes and 663 touches in the league this term.

Lucas's shooting accuracy is at 43%, while the Brazilian has created just three big chances. The former Paris Saint-Germain attacker also trails Willian in passes (566) and touches (1,025), while he has managed just 15 crosses to Willian's 114, which is some contrast for a wide player.

Son leads the way again with a shooting accuracy of 57%, while the South Korean has created 10 big chances. Son is behind Willian in passes (529), though, and also touches (945), which is an indication of what the Chelsea attacker brings to the team in general beyond simply goals and assists.

DEFENCE

Willian's defensive statistics are also impressive, boasting 20 interceptions and 24 tackles won in the Premier League this season. He has also contributed seven clearances and has won seven aerial battles. Son, on the other hand, has 11 interceptions, 10 tackles won and six aerial battles won.

Willian's tackles per game in the Premier League this season is 1.4, while he is also ahead of Lucas in interceptions and tackles won; the Spurs attacker, though, has made more clearances and has won more aerial battles, boasting an impressive 48 in that particular category.

Lamela's defensive statistics do not stack up particularly well against Willian, managing just five interceptions, 15 tackles won and three aerial battles won. The Chelsea forward has made 11 more appearances in the Premier League, though, and therefore it is difficult to make a direct comparison.

For that reason, it is also tough to compare Willian with Sessegnon and Bergwijn. That said, the latter only had an average of 0.5 tackles per game in the first half of the Eredivisie season, in addition to 0.1 blocks per game.

Willian's work-rate certainly makes him an even more attractive proposition for Tottenham, and it would be fair to say that the South American stacks up extremely well across the board to the other wingers in the squad.
