Newcastle United have reportedly failed in their attempts to sign Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco.
The Magpies have already acquired right-back Kieran Tripper from the La Liga champions, and it is understood that they were hoping to recruit Carrasco as well before the 11pm deadline.
However, ESPN, via Fichajes, reports that Atletico have rejected Newcastle's enquiries for the Belgium international, who they consider untouchable unless his €60m (£50.1m) release clause is activated.
The 28-year-old was also attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur, but a deal to move to North London has not materialised.
Carrasco has made a total of 204 appearances in two spells for Atletico across all competitions, scoring 33 goals and registering 38 assists.
Newcastle have signed four players in the January transfer window so far, spending close to £80m, with Dan Burn set to become their fifth addition if he finalises his move from Brighton & Hove Albion. body check tags ::
