Leeds United have announced the signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon on a season-long loan deal.

The 25-year-old returns to the Championship three years after joining Spurs from Swansea City in the summer of 2020, but he has failed to kick on since arriving in North London.

Rodon has made just 24 appearances for Spurs over the past three seasons, starting a mere eight Premier League games and failing to register a goal or assist in that time.

The Wales international fared slightly better during a loan spell with French side Rennes, scoring one goal in 22 appearances and starting 16 Ligue 1 matches for Les Rouges et Noir.

However, Rodon did not play a single minute for Spurs in pre-season under Ange Postecoglou, and he has now made an expected exit for Elland Road for the next 12 months.

"It's very exciting. I know the history and it is a massive club, I can't wait to get started and I am excited for the season ahead," the centre-back told leedsunited.com.

"I just feel like the project and the way the manager wants to play, it's a great time for me to play here and improve. When Leeds came calling it was very hard for me to turn that down. I am really looking forward to the season ahead and being successful.

"As the years have gone on, I have learnt a lot of things. I am a ball playing centre-half and the way we want to play here, it starts from the back. It is important for me to brave and play with the team.

"Winning is the main thing and keeping the goals out is what I am all about. Playing that way has always suited me over the years and having experience of playing against the manager before, it is amazing attractive football and that was a big factor of why I wanted to be here. I can't wait to get started."

Spurs paid €12.1m (£10.5m) to bring the Welshman to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2020, and he remains under contract with the Lilywhites until 2025, but his long-term future remains unclear.

Rodon follows compatriot Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow and Sam Byram to Elland Road for the 2023-24 season, while following Harry Winks and Lucas Moura out of the Tottenham exit door.

The ex-Swansea man was already behind Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies in the central pecking order at Tottenham, who have strengthened in that area with the capture of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

Eighteen-year-old Ashley Phillips has also joined from Blackburn Rovers, and Rodon is not expected to be the only defensive exit from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the coming weeks.

Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga are both on the chopping block, although the former impressed in Tuesday's Joan Gamper Trophy clash with Barcelona after rejecting the chance to join Spartak Moscow.

Spurs - who have also accepted Bayern Munich's fourth bid for Harry Kane - begin their new Premier League campaign away to London rivals Brentford on Sunday afternoon. body check tags ::
