Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Kasey Keller has told Sports Mole that Spurs "need to spend big and well off course" in order to make them a team capable of challenging for silverware once again.

There have been standout results for Tottenham this season, most recently 4-0 and 5-0 wins over Manchester City and Southampton respectively, but it has again been a campaign riddled with inconsistency.

The North London giants are currently 10th in the Premier League table, five points behind fourth-placed Nottingham Forest, ahead of their return to league action, which comes at home to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs will tackle Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Thursday night, meanwhile, and a trophy this season would go a long way in holding off the growing pressure on head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero criticised Spurs for their lack of investment following the recent defeat to Chelsea, claiming that their spending power, which is lower than their rivals, is making it difficult for the club to compete.

Keller says Levy deserves credit for "off-field" matters

Keller, who turned out for Spurs between 2001 and 2005, has said that chairman Daniel Levy deserves huge credit for his "off-field" work, with the club boasting a state-of-the-art training ground and one of the best stadiums in world football.

However, the 55-year-old admitted that a lot of money needs to be put into recruitment if the capital giants are to be taken seriously when it comes to the top-four race and the battle to lift trophies.

When asked whether Levy, who is facing ongoing criticism from a number of Spurs fans, is to blame for the current struggles, Keller said that it would be unfair to single out the chairman.

"No it can't (the blame cannot all be put on him). Full credit to Daniel for the off-field side of the club. The training ground is state of the art and the Stadium is one of the best in the Premier League. This is something that Daniel will be remembered for," Keller told Sports Mole.

Keller admits significant investment is needed to help Spurs challenge for silverware

"Looking at the team on the pitch, you think when Spurs were challenging for the title, playing Champions League football, that was the time to back the manager and [Mauricio] Pochettino was performing well above himself.

"He wasn't backed and then the team dropped out the Champions League, players left and moved on and the quality wasn't replaced. Now, with Harry Kane gone as well, you look at the squad and it's not of a Champions League quality.

"So Ange has to look to rebuild and will need time. Spurs do need to spend big and well off course to recruit the right players to get them back challenging for top four and also aiming to win silverware."

Keller also told Sports Mole that the club would be wrong to "keep changing managers" amid suggestions that Postecoglou could lose his job in the near future.

Tottenham's 5-0 success over Southampton ended a five-game winless run in all competitions for the North London outfit, who will face Man United and Liverpool in back-to-back home fixtures before heading to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

Kasey Keller was speaking to Sports Mole on behalf of William Hill Vegas.
