Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly attempting to strengthen their backline with the signing of AZ Alkmaar defender Owen Wijndal.

During the closing months of 2021-22, Spurs were one of the form teams in the Premier League, their results on par with that of Manchester City and Liverpool.

However, with Champions League football having been secured, head coach Antonio Conte is taking the opportunity to make significant changes to his first-team squad.

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster and Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic have already been signed on free transfers, and more players are expected to follow the pair to North London.

According to Footmercato, Spurs have initiated discussions with AZ regarding the potential addition of Wijndal before the start of the next campaign.

Despite not representing one of Dutch football's biggest clubs, Wijndal has been regarded as one of the most promising players outside of the Eredivisie's big three for a number of years.

In total, the left-sided player has contributed four goals and 27 assists from his 143 appearances for AZ, while he has progressed through every age group with the national team.

The 22-year-old already has 11 caps to his name for the Netherlands, despite his last outing came almost a year ago at Euro 2020.

Wijndal is more accustomed to playing at left-back, but Conte will likely convert the player into a full-time wing-back should he win the race for his signature.

Spurs already have a number of players who can play in that role, with Perisic effectively becoming a third-choice option in the event that the two players ahead of him are unavailable.

As it stands, Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon are currently competing for a position in the team, the former in possession of the shirt after finally showcasing his ability since Conte's arrival in November.

The 22-year-old ended the most recent campaign with 13 starts and two substitute outings in the Premier League, the Englishman being a mainstay in the team during the run-in.

If Wijndal is to arrive at Spurs, it would likely mean a departure for Reguilon, who is known to be of interest to Real Madrid in a summer where a buy-back clause becomes active.

Marcelo is departing Los Blancos this summer and Ferland Mendy is attracting interest from the Premier League, creating a scenario where Reguilon could be signed as a replacement.

However, the report adds that Napoli, Juventus and Lyon are also admirers of Wijndal, who has two years left on his contract. body check tags ::
