Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly hoping to tempt Wigan Athletic with a bid for James McCarthy including cash plus players.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is believed to be a long-term admirer of the midfielder, but is unwilling to meet a £20m price tag on the youngster's head.
Villas-Boas wants to use fringe players such as Harry Kane to sweeten negotiations with Latics boss Owen Coyle over the playmaker, according to The Mirror.
Coyle has been adamant that he is under no pressure to sell any of his squad before the transfer window closes, including McCarthy.
The 22-year-old, who was ever-present for the Latics under Roberto Martinez last season, has been linked with a move to rejoin the Spaniard at Everton in recent weeks.
