Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly contemplating whether to make an approach for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, formerly of rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly identified Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as a potential summer transfer target.

Hugo Lloris, the club captain, is the long-serving number one at Spurs, making a total of 443 appearances in all competitions since 2012.

As recently as last year, the Frenchman extended his contract at the North London rivals until 2024, the intention being that the veteran would remain as undisputed first choice.

However, a number of high-profile errors from the 2018 World Cup winner have led to criticism and doubts over his longevity between the sticks.

With deputy Fraser Forster turning 35 years of age later this month, Spurs are at a stage where they need to scour the market for younger alternatives.

According to 90min, that could see club officials press ahead with a controversial move for Martinez.

Although his reputation has been enhanced while at Aston Villa and representing Argentina, Martinez is formerly of London rivals Arsenal.

Martinez made a total of 38 outings for the Gunners between 2010 and 2020, just 15 of those coming in the Premier League, but his previous association with the Gunners would leave opinions divided.

Since moving to the West Midlands, Martinez has made 96 outings in England's top flight, as well as becoming number one with Argentina and playing a key role in their World Cup triumph late last year.

The 30-year-old won the Golden Glove award for his performances at the tournament, but his efforts on the global stage have inevitably led to greater interest in his signature.

Despite possessing a contract at Villa until 2027, Martinez has publicly acknowledged that he is keen to play for a Champions League over the coming years.

Villa have shown a high level of ambition in recent seasons, but they remain in the bottom half of the Premier League standings and not in contention for European football's premier competition.

In sharp contrast, Spurs hold a four-point advantage in fourth position and have prevailed in four of their last five top-flight fixtures. body check tags ::
