Uruguay have recorded a 2-1 win over UAE in their opening Olympic men's football match at Old Trafford this afternoon.
UAE started the match strongly, coming close within five minutes when Ahmed Khalil found Ismaeil Matar in the box, but his header went just wide.
Matar was involved again shortly afterwards, but this time his aim was spot on as he rounded goalkeeper Martin Campana before sliding his side into a shock lead.
The 29-year-old striker continued to cause Uruguay problems as he came close twice more before the tournament's dark horses found the equaliser.
It came through Gaston Ramirez, who unleashed an unstoppable free kick past Ali Khaseif five minutes before half-time.
Nicolas Lodeiro came on at half-time and made an impact within 10 minutes, firing a long range effort into the far corner to give Uruguay the lead.
Edinson Cavani threatened to make it 3-1 soon after, but he was stopped by Mohamed Ahmed just in time from UAE's point of view.
Kalil almost levelled the sides when he advanced into the box, but his effort went narrowly wide as Uruguay saw out the 2-1 victory.
Next up for Uruguay is Senegal, while UAE face Great Britain.
