Sir Geoff Hurst "surprised" by Sam Allardyce criticism

West Ham United legend Sir Geoff Hurst offers under-fire manager Sam Allardyce his full backing, claiming that questions over his future at Upton Park are simply unfair.

Former West Ham United striker Sir Geoff Hurst has warned supporters who want Sam Allardyce to leave the club this summer to be careful what they wish for.

The Hammers boss is out of contract at the end of the season, and with no talks over a new deal due anytime soon, it has been reported that he could bring his four-year spell at Upton Park to an end.

Allardyce has had to withstand swathes of criticism as a result of his perceived route-one style of play, leading to certain sections of the fanbase calling for a change when the campaign comes to a close.

However, Hurst, who spent 13 years of his illustrious playing career at West Ham, believes that Allardyce is the best man to continue leading the West London outfit.

"I think Sam should stay and I am surprised there are people who think otherwise. You should be careful what you wish for," the World Cup winner told Goal.com. "I don't see anyone out there who could come in and guarantee doing a better job than Sam.

"There have been some terrific performances this season and the team is moving in the right direction. What's been impressive for me has been the level of performances against the top sides. The players have really held their own and gone toe-to-toe with them, especially at Upton Park.

"I don't know what the owners' plans are because obviously the move to the Olympic Stadium is big in their thoughts and they are looking to the future, but I would like to see Sam in charge next season."

West Ham are currently ninth in the Premier League table.
