Wigan Athletic's winning run comes to an end with a 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at the DW Stadium.

West Bromwich Albion have survived a late onslaught to claim a 2-1 victory against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Wigan started brightly and had the game's first chance when a ball dropped to Ben Watson on the edge of the box, but Boaz Myhill reacted well to push the shot to safety.

West Brom started to enjoy more possession as the first half progressed and managed to take the lead thanks to Chris Brunt.

The Baggies winger collected a pass on the wing before delivering an inch-perfect cross that allowed James Morrison to head the ball past a helpless Ali Al-Habsi.

The visitors doubled their lead before the break when Billy Jones saw his shot deflect off Gary Caldwell before beating Al-Habsi.

However, the Latics halved West Brom's lead on the stroke of half-time with Arouna Kone tapping in from close range following a cross from Jean Beausejour.

Wigan gained encouragement from Kone's goal and should have been level a few minutes after the restart but Caldwell failed to make up for his earlier own goal by heading wide of Myhill's goal.

The hosts were close to being immediately punished for Caldwell's miss as Shane Long picked out Romelu Lukaku, but the Belgian striker was then denied by an Al-Habsi save.

As the game entered its final stages, a golden opportunity fell to Shaun Maloney inside the box but the Scottish midfielder blazed his effort over the crossbar from 12 yards out.

Martinez sent most of his attacking options onto the pitch but the Baggies held firm in defence to secure the three points.
