Aron Gunnarson's solitary strike gives Cardiff City a 1-0 win away at relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic in Tuesday evening's Championship game at the DW Stadium.

Aron Gunnarson's solitary strike has given Cardiff City a 1-0 win away at struggling Wigan Athletic in this evening's Championship game at the DW Stadium.

The game went through the motions in the opening stages as both sides found their feet on the difficult pitch conditions.

In the 10th minute, David Marshall had to be alert to capture Sheyi Ojo's cross after a deflection off Matthew Connolly.

Midway through the first half, the Bluebirds flew into action when Connolly struck just wide from 20 yards, and in the 20th minute, Gunnarson marauded unassisted into the box before slotting home.

Just before the half-hour mark, the visitors could have been two goals up, Eoin Doyle blasting a half-volley from long range that Ali Al-Habsi stopped at the second time of asking.

With just seven minutes left until the break, Wigan managed to get the ball into the net, but James McClean was ruled offside.

The second half began with both sides playing tentative football, the first chance after the restart not coming until just after the hour when Gunnarsson headed over from Doyle's cross.

Wigan came close to levelling the scores in the 75th minute, but Marshall was able to palm away Harry Maguire's low drive from 20 yards.

With the scoreline on a knife edge, the Bluebirds were next to register a chance of note, as Sean Morrison headed wide of goal from Peter Whittingham's corner kick with just eight minutes to go.

A late flurry of action followed in the dying stages, but ultimately Gunnarsson's goal proved the difference as Cardiff rose to 13th in the table, while the beleaguered Latics now sit second from bottom and nine points from safety.
