Wigan are said to be interested in Peterborough United target James McClean.
The Derry City midfielder was expected to move to London Road but the deal has stalled, alerting Wigan to his availability.
Championship side Peterborough had agreed a fee for the 22-year-old but the deal has faltered at the contract stage.
"The club and Peterborough had agreed a package but it has broken down due to personal terms," Derry chairman Philip O'Doherty told the Derry Journal.
"Wigan, even though they haven't made a formal offer, are interested and being kept up to date by the agent."
O'Doherty added that Wigan boss Roberto Martinez sees the 22-year-old as a potential replacement for Charles N'Zogbia, who is set to join Aston Villa.
"Wigan had expressed a serious interest in James, they spent a lot of time checking him out and they may well rekindle their interest now N'Zogbia's gone," he said.
