Roger Espinoza has had his Wigan Athletic contract terminated six months early to allow him to return to the United States.
The 28-year-old joined the Latics two years ago from Sporting Kansas City and has gone on to score three goals in 57 total appearances for the club.
"He's a terrific kid and I've got an awful lot of time for him," Latics boss Malky Mackay told the club website.
"He's been heavily involved in my squads so far, but it's more of a lifestyle thing and I respect that. He's done well for this football club over a long period and it's right to let him go back to America. We wish him all the best."
The Honduran midfielder added: "I've enjoyed my two years here and will take away some amazing memories from Wigan."
Espinoza played all 90 minutes when Wigan famously beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup in 2013.
