Paul Lambert: 'I could have earned promotion with Wolverhampton Wanderers'

Former head coach Paul Lambert says that he could have earned promotion with Wolverhampton Wanderers had he been given more time at Molineux.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Paul Lambert has claimed that he could have earned promotion for the club had he been given longer in the role by Fosun International.

After Walter Zenga was sacked after just 17 games in charge, the club's new owners brought in Lambert as his replacement but the Scot could not solve Wolves' inconsistency with 14 wins and 14 defeats coming from 33 matches in all competitions.

Lambert was replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo, who has since taken the West Midlands outfit to the top of the Championship standings, but Lambert has insisted that he could have produced similar results had he remained in the dugout.

The 48-year-old told the Express & Star: "I've no animosity towards Wolves whatsoever - it's a great club with a great fanbase. I really enjoyed my time there and we had some really good moments.

"There were ups and down and I always say the Championship is about consistency. Then we had a great cup run as well.

"I've got no doubt I could have them up there too and that's not being big headed or anything, I've done it with Norwich and I know what it takes. Wolves are doing great and hopefully they do go up - it's a great club with good people like Kev [Thelwell] and Laurie [Dalrymple]."

Wolves have won seven of their last eight matches at the second tier, giving the club a four-point cushion over Cardiff City.
