Gary O'Neil: 'Wolves should have defeated Tottenham Hotspur easier'

Head coach Gary O'Neil feels that Wolverhampton Wanderers should have defeated Tottenham Hotspur more comfortably than by a 2-1 scoreline.

Head coach Gary O'Neil has talked up the performance of his Wolverhampton Wanderers side after they recorded a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Wolves made the trip to North London on the back of a mixed run of form, suffering home defeats to Manchester United and Brentford but defeating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in between.

The West Midlands outfit were heavy underdogs as they went up against opponents who had won their previous five matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, two goals from Joao Gomes earned Wolves another win in the capital, with Dejan Kulusevski having put Spurs back on level terms at the beginning of the second half.

Although the visitors played much of the game on the counter-attack, they were full value for their success and wasted a number of opportunities throughout the contest.

That was acknowledged by O'Neil after the game, yet he was full of praise for his players as they kept themselves in the mix for European qualification.

Speaking to Sky Sports, O'Neil said: "The lads were excellent. I thought it was thoroughly deserved. We spent some time in a low block and in numbers but that is a credit to the quality of Tottenham.

"I think we should probably had put the game to bed with the chances we had on the counter-attack. You just know at Tottenham that they are going to do something at some point and I felt we needed to capitalise on some of our good play.

"I'm disappointed with their goal but it was a really good performance. We keep pushing upwards."

Wolves remain in 11th position in the Premier League standings, a consequence of Chelsea earning a 1-1 draw away at Manchester City in the Saturday evening kickoff.

Nevertheless, just two points separate Wolves to seventh-placed Newcastle United ahead of welcoming Sheffield United to Molineux on February 25. body check tags ::
