Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly closing in on the signing of Girona defender Santiago Bueno.

Throughout the summer transfer window, Wolves supporters have been left frustrated by their club's efforts in the market, with owners Fosun International insisting that they need to make cutbacks to meet FFP criteria.

As it stands, only the acquisition of Matt Doherty on a free transfer has been made to bolster the senior ranks, focus instead being placed on player sales.

However, the potential big-money departure of Matheus Nunes would leave Wolves in a position where they could make a number of signings before Friday's transfer deadline.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs has also revealed that the loan departure of Goncalo Guedes has freed up space on the wage bill, and it appears that Wolves are ready to act.

According to a number of different outlets and journalists, Bueno is on the brink of making the switch to the Premier League outfit.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says that the switch is effectively a done deal, prior to a medical, after negotiations were concluded on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs suggests that the 24-year-old's medical will take place on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.

Having initially spent time in the Barcelona academy system, Bueno has gone on to forge a career at Girona, moving there as a free agent in 2019.

The centre-back has since gone on to make 120 appearances in all competitions, contributing a total of four goals and five assists during that time.

In his first full season of La Liga football in 2022-23, Bueno made 34 starts, featuring in three games against Real Madrid and Barcelona without suffering a defeat, which included a clean sheet kept against the latter at Camp Nou.

Although the 24-year-old did not represent Uruguay at the World Cup, he made his first two senior outings for his country in March, completing 90 minutes against each of Japan and South Korea.

Girona-based Journalist Nil Sola says that a final fee for Bueno could reach €10m (£8.6m), the player in line to compete with Max Kilman, Craig Dawson and Toti Gomes for a starting role. body check tags ::
