Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel made up for his sixth-place start to finish second, while Hamilton completed the podium after his difficult start.
Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher retired from the race with 11 laps gone after appearing to suffer problems with third gear.
Australian Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso finished fourth and fifth at Albert Park, while Kimi Raikkonen's late surge saw him finish seventh.
